Onehunga gardens – beautiful, productive, and a lot of work

Onehunga is one of South Central Auckland’s most established suburbs – and the gardens show it. Close to the Manukau Harbour, with the slopes of Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill to the north, many properties here have mature gardens that have been developing for decades. That’s a good thing. It also means serious pruning, regular clear-outs, and a fair amount of the tough, fibrous material that makes green waste disposal genuinely annoying.

Harbour-edge exposure brings its own character too: prevailing winds off the Manukau mean many Onehunga gardeners rely on robust windbreak plantings – large hedges, shelter shrubs, tough coastal species. These need regular cutting back, and when you’re trimming a mature shelter hedge, you end up with a volume of material that won’t fit in a regular wheelie bin.

After a storm – and Onehunga gets a few – there’s often a round of fallen branches, storm debris, and palm fronds to deal with on top of the usual maintenance. Our yard is open six days a week and takes it all.

Your green waste comes back as something useful – not landfill

Every load you drop off, and every bin we collect, goes to our Penrose facility for processing. We transform green waste into NutriPower® Compost, NutriPower® Garden Mix, and MulchMax® Organic Mulch – products that go back into Auckland gardens. Nothing goes to landfill.

Why Onehunga residents choose GreenCycle

We take the tough stuff

Bamboo, flax, palms, noxious weeds, large logs, stumps — the material that general waste companies often turn away. It’s exactly what Onehunga gardens produce.

Green waste only – done properly

We focus exclusively on green waste, which means we can process it properly, keep costs low, and guarantee that everything is recycled –not just sorted and landfilled.

Transparent pricing

$49 flat for a standard trailer. Skip bins from $299 with no hidden charges. You know what you’re paying before you arrive.

Green Waste questions from Onehunga residents

  • How far is GreenCycle from Onehunga?

Our yard is at 141 Hugo Johnston Drive, Penrose – less than 5 minutes from the Onehunga town centre via Neilson Street or Church St. We're Onehunga's closest green waste recycling facility.

  • Can I drop off a trailer of garden waste from my Onehunga property?

Absolutely. A standard trailer of regular garden waste – hedge trimmings, palm fronds, shrub cutbacks – usually comes in under 260kg, which is our flat-rate threshold. That's $49 for the load. Bring it in any time we're open: Monday to Friday 8am–5pm, or Saturday 9am–4pm.

  • Do you deliver skip bins to Onehunga?

Yes – and because we're right next door in Penrose, Onehunga is in our best-priced delivery zone. We deliver Monday to Friday. Book online at greencycle.co.nz or call us on 09 300 6260.

  • I’ve got bamboo and palm trees to get rid of – can you take those?

Yes, and this is one of the things we're specifically set up for. Bamboo, palm fronds, palm logs (including Phoenix Palm), flax/harakeke, cabbage trees and yucca — we take all of it, in any size. We process all of it into mulch and compost.

  • What’s the difference between dropping off and hiring a skip bin?

Drop-off works best if you've loaded a car, trailer or ute and want to deal with it in one trip. It's fast and cheap – $49 for most standard loads. A skip bin suits you better if you're working through a bigger project over a few days, don't have a trailer, or want the convenience of filling at your own pace. Not sure? Call us and we'll help you figure out which makes more sense for your job.

  • Is it cheaper than waiting for Auckland Council’s inorganic collection?

Council inorganic collections don't take green waste. Dispose with us from $49, or a skip bin from $299 delivered to your door — usually quicker, cheaper than you'd expect, and everything gets recycled rather than going to landfill.

  • What happens to the green waste after I drop it off?

Everything is processed at our Penrose facility and converted into NutriPower® Compost, NutriPower® Garden Mix, and MulchMax® Organic Mulch. These products go back into Auckland gardens and landscaping projects. Nothing goes to landfill.

  • Can I get a skip bin delivered for a weekend garden project?

Delivery and collection is Monday to Friday, with a 3 day hire. Weekend Special: order a delivery on Wednesday or Thursday with pick up Monday and you’ll have it ready and waiting for the weekend. Extra hire days are $10/day and can be added at time of booking.

  • Do you take storm debris and fallen branches?

Yes. After a windy stretch off the Manukau – or any decent Auckland storm – we get a spike in drop-offs and bookings. Branches, palm fronds, leafy debris, whole fallen sections of trees – all of it is accepted. Get in touch if you've got a large volume and want to discuss the best option.

Ready to clear out your Onehunga garden?

Whether you’re loading the trailer for a quick run to Penrose, or you want a skip bin at your door for a bigger job – GreenCycle makes it straightforward. We’re five minutes away, we take everything, and it all gets recycled.
